For people aged 70 to 90, whose mobility may be more limited, this travel constraint potentially reduces the actual frequency of exposure to the benefits of a park, even a well-designed one.

Conversely, a canopy of trees visible directly from home or on the immediate street offers passive, daily exposure without any particular effort. Every glance out the window, every step outside the front door, every trip down the street becomes an opportunity for exposure to this natural environment, which could explain a more consistent cumulative effect on mental well-being than occasional visits to a more distant park.

A Sustainable and Stable Environmental Cue

Mature trees also represent a relatively stable element of the urban landscape, unlike other features that may change, be removed, or deteriorate over time. If this finding is confirmed by other studies conducted around the world, it could have concrete implications for municipal decision-makers and urban planners who are designing neighborhood developments, particularly those intended to accommodate an aging population. Rather than concentrating green investments solely in large, centralized parks, paying greater attention to the diffuse tree canopy—in residential streets and in the immediate vicinity of homes—could represent a meaningful investment in the mental well-being of older residents.

This line of thinking is part of a broader trend in environmental health research, which seeks to pinpoint exactly which aspects of the urban environment most influence people’s physical and mental health, in order to guide urban planning decisions toward the most effective interventions rather than those that merely appear the most visible or symbolic.

One Approach Among Many for the Well-Being of Older Adults

It would, however, be premature to present tree planting as a single or sufficient solution to depression among older adults—a public health problem with multiple and often interrelated causes, including social isolation, physical health, socioeconomic conditions, and access to mental health care. Tree canopy appears to be one environmental factor among many, and its relative importance warrants confirmation through further research before large-scale public policies are guided solely on this basis.

What this study concretely offers is a robust statistical signal, based on a 12-year follow-up of more than a thousand participants, which deserves to be taken seriously by research in environmental health and gerontology—without, however, being prematurely transformed into an absolute certainty regarding the most effective levers for action to improve the mental well-being of aging populations.

What I take away from this study is an invitation to look at our immediate environment in a different light. We often invest in large, high-profile green projects, when the real difference might lie in the trees we pass every day without really noticing them.

Conclusion: A Strong Statistical Signal, to Be Interpreted with Caution
