U.S. President Donald Trump announced an $8 billion aid package for American farmers, as rising diesel and fertilizer prices are weighing on agricultural producers as the harvest season approaches. Mr. Trump announced the funding during a rally in Kansas, two weeks before the midterm elections that will determine the composition of Congress. This plan, described by the administration as a “harvest fuel assistance program,” comes as Republicans face tight races in several states where the agricultural sector plays a significant role. This announcement marks the second time in 11 months that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has offered farmers one-time financial assistance.

The War Against Iran Is Driving Up Farmers’ Costs

Donald Trump’s war against Iran has contributed to rising costs for farmers, particularly due to disruptions in fertilizer supplies passing through the Strait of Hormuz. According to CNN, the conflict has disrupted about one-third of the global supply that normally passes through this strategic waterway, driving up fertilizer prices this year. Diesel has also become increasingly expensive, driving up the operating costs of farm machinery at a critical time for producers. Farmers rely heavily on diesel-powered machinery to plant and harvest their crops, leaving them vulnerable to rising fuel prices as they prepare for the fall harvest.

Second Major Aid Package in 11 Months

This new program follows a $12 billion agricultural aid package announced in December 2025. That earlier aid was intended to support producers facing the consequences of trade disputes triggered by tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, which had reduced export demand for U.S. crops and other agricultural products. The latest plan addresses a different set of pressures, as higher fuel and fertilizer costs are weighing on farmers’ operating expenses. Both programs provide one-time payments rather than a permanent change to the agricultural aid system. In the report provided, the administration did not give further details on how this $8 billion will be distributed among farmers.

Electoral Pressure in Agricultural States

This announcement comes as Republicans seek to retain their seats in Congress in states where agriculture plays a major economic role. Polls indicate that the Senate race is shaping up to be close in states won by Trump in the last three presidential elections, notably Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, and Texas. According to the report, Democrats are also expected to win the Senate races in North Carolina and Georgia. Kansas, which has not elected a Democratic senator since 1932, is the scene of a very close race between Republican Senator Roger Marshall and Democratic candidate Adam Hamilton. At the rally held in Kansas, during which he announced this program, Trump praised Marshall for helping to secure this new relief package.

Nothing said at that rally can take away from the fact that Kansans are struggling with rising gas and diesel prices, are having a hard time accessing affordable health care, and are fed up with corruption in Washington,

Trump used the rally in Kansas to highlight his administration’s support for farmers, promising additional aid if Republicans retain control of Congress. He also praised Marshall for helping to secure the latest relief package, linking the funding announcement to the Republican senator’s campaign. The administration’s decision to provide billions of dollars in aid comes as farmers face rising production costs and uncertainty about the economic repercussions of the conflict with Iran. This plan aims to provide financial relief, although the press release does not specify either the individual amounts of aid or the eligibility requirements.

The timing of this aid package is crucial for farmers preparing for harvest, a period during which fuel costs can significantly increase expenses related to operating machinery and transporting crops. Rising fertilizer prices have added an additional financial burden, particularly for farmers who must purchase agricultural inputs while facing uncertain income. This new funding follows previous federal aid aimed at mitigating the effects of tariffs and declining export demand. With the midterm elections approaching, the administration’s latest announcement places agricultural aid on par with the economic concerns facing voters in agriculture-dependent states. The CNN report did not provide additional details on the program’s distribution guidelines or the amount each farmer might receive.
